Memory types in psychology:
Moving on to memory types now. There are 3 types of memory that will be discussed individually.
1. SENSORY MEMORY:
In sensory memory, our senses help us store information in our brain. The memory is stored in our brain after the senses pick it up.
The sensory memory is further broken down into two types:
Basically, it concerns how we see things. Our visual memory is based on this. This only lasts for a moment.
It focuses on the sounds. It is specific to our auditory system. It lasts for 3-4 seconds.
2. SHORT TERM MEMORY:
This is a short-term memory, which means it can only remember a small amount of information for a short period of time.
Short-term memory is also referred to as working memory. You use your working memory for immediate processing. This lasts for 2-30 seconds.
3. LONG TERM MEMORY:
Memory that stores information for a very long time is known as long-term memory. It lasts for the rest of one’s life.
Further, it is divided into two types:
This memory is declarative. The memory can be easily explained and defined.
This memory is non-declarative. This memory is of the type that is impossible to explain and difficult to define.
WHAT MAKES US FORGET THINGS?
It is common for us to forget things. It’s because the short-term memory information hasn’t been transferred to the long-term memory.
Thus, we are prone to forgetting things due to this reason.
